Type 2 diabetes is caused when body cells are unable to absorb blood sugar and the patient becomes insulin resistant. Actually, it is insulin which helps the body to move blood sugar in cells where it is used to generate energy. Whenever, liver, fat or muscles develop insulin resistance, they restrict absorption of insulin therefore causing excess of blood sugar. Due to sugar overload, Pancreas automatically starts producing more insulin to help absorb excess sugar, but most body parts have already become insulin resistance, by then.
Blood sugar is commonly known as glucose. The most frequent cause of excess glucose is obesity. People who are overweight are more prone to Type 2 diabetes because fat resist insulin’s ability to move blood sugar in cells.
Nowadays, Type 2 diabetes is not only associated with obesity but also affects those who are slim. Actually, family history and genetics play an important role in producing diabetic symptoms. Development of this disease increases with age therefore elderly people, who have a family history of Type 2 diabetes, should regularly consult doctors because they represent highest risk group, among all types of Type 2 patients.
Global phenomenon
This disease is an epidemic which has influenced major portions of global population. In America, there are about 23 million people, who are Type 2 diabetic. If left untreated, severe complexities may arise leading to impairment of body organs and cardiovascular problems. Besides obesity, other major factors contributing to Type 2 are high cholesterol, hypertension and metabolic syndrome. Besides, anyone treated with acromegaly, cushing’s syndrome and pheochromocytoma are also vulnerable to Type 2 diabetes.
Symptoms
It should also be noticed that 90% of diabetic cases are Type 2, but unfortunately there are no set symptoms. Possible symptoms include blurred vision, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, slow healing as well as increase in appetite, thirst or urination. There are various methods of treatment and most of these methods are very inexpensive. Nevertheless, short term goals of treatment include lowering of blood sugar level whereas long term goals include prevention of major complications.
Diabetes management
Apart from treatment, anyone can learn some basic skills that should ensure their rapid recovery. To evade complications, interest in exercise and dietary precautions have gained widespread acceptance because recent scientific studies proclaim that major complications can be prevented by adapting a healthy lifestyle. Beside treatment, diabetic management skills include recording blood glucose levels. Glucose meters can be bought from any pharmacy which contain test strips with small needles and a logbook to trace glucose level. Patients should also learn to prepare medications. Similarly, awareness of glucose level is also important.
Diet controversy
Still, healthy diet is the most important factor. Physicians suggest that patients can fully recover from diabetes Type 2 if they adhere to strict diabetic diet and try to loose extra weight. According to American Diabetes Association, carbohydrates should constitute 60 to 70 percent of daily diet. Some researchers have debated that carbohydrates should be less than 40 percent and other have claimed figures as high as 70 percent, but everyone agrees that carbohydrates play important role in restricting high glucose levels. Interestingly, every major diabetic research has concluded that patients should not take diet containing fructose, but fruits are an exception to this rule. The controversy of diet continues to spark interest because Canadian Diabetic Association recommends intake of table sugar. Moreover, prominent scientist Dr, Richard K Bernstein, fellow of American College of Nutrition, is critical of the idea that carbohydrates are as important as claimed. Instead, he is a fervent supporter of low carbohydrate diet. Also, many books have been written on the subject of controlling diabetes with vegetables. Regarding vegetables, there is major evidence in support of using mushrooms which have proved to benefit diabetes Type 2 patients.
Dietary plan?
Nevertheless, everyone agrees that people with diabetes should eat at consistent time every day and should adhere to whatever diet plan they have been offered. In addition, meal plan should fit the lifestyle of a patient and they should not be forced to develop diet plan which would be difficult to follow. Doctors recommend that eating right amount of food, choosing healthy foods and eating food at the right time, are more important than selecting the perfect dietary combination.
Also, physicians caution against use of advertised products for diabetes which are expansive or contain high level of fats. To them, most advertised products contain no special benefits to Type 2 diabetic patients. Due to these precautions, it is usually recommended that patients should keep their doctors informed about other diet that they may be taking. It will not be an oversimplification to suggest that regular exercise and proper diet control should prevent the spread of diabetes in most patients, regardless of the fact that different doctors recommend different diets.

Yes, a list would be nice. For me, I eat 6 small meals a day. That means I have to plan what to eat and be prepared. Each Meal contains approximately 200-300 calories. I can basically eat what I want. The thing I notice that sends my blood sugar soaring is any kind of soda, diet or regular. So I think it's and individual thing. You need to keep a food log and see what triggers your blood sugar.

Imagine a slice of whole wheat bread. This is a standard of 15 grams, and you can eat about 45 grams of carbs at a meal. This includes potatoes & the like. You can eat most vegetables unlimited, just like most diets (lettuce, carrots, kale, squash, and so on). Cut back on breads and potatoes. I follow the Zone/South Beach diets because to me they are easy. You eat a well-rounded diet including protein, carb, and fat. If you cut back on how much you eat, likely you will have lower sugars. You can eat "normal" portion sizes. For example, ever notice a box of frozen corn is meant for 4 people to eat?? Allow your food time to satisfy you. I find caffeine sodas (Coke) drop my sugar in a flash. Glycemic Index tries to list foods for you that digest slowly. Keep reading on the Internet.

A good source for individual information and guidance on diet and food planning is CalorieCount.com. I was just told that I am pre-diabetic (I had gestational diabetes which predisposes). I too, was trying to find the food information that many have requested; and found this site. It helps with nutrient level intakes, etc. It is not necessarily specific foods that can't be eaten (although most processed/prepackaged food will alway be on the no list because of high sodium levels), but how much, what are the other foods that are being eaten and when. Balance is the key. Also my doctor said "no white food" (exception is potatoes) In other words always whole grain, because it metabolizes slower than processed grains. Glucose is released more slowly over a longer period of time and doesn't spike blood sugar.

My Blood sugars were 300+ fasting and spiked all through the day. A1C=9! I went on something called juice + (https://www.juiceplus.com/nsa/content/Home.soa?site=lb22783) Used the shake in the AM, ate carbs- whole wheat/oatmeal and less carbs at night. Take 1300mg glucaphage and went on januvia. 50units of long insulin at night. My sugars are now 90's fasting and around 120 after meals. Of course I also started walking 45 min 4 times a week. You must be willing to accept that you simply cannot eat the things you use to. Consult your Dr, lots of meds are out there. I am now in the process of cutting back my insulin. Good Luck everyone. I work in the medical feild for 12+ years with cancer patients. I would recommend juice+. Tell Laurie I sent you.

For all those who want their list of food to eat to lower their A1C numbers, you are looking at only one aspect of well being. I've been T-2 for 7 years and have kept A1C numbers under 7 most of the time. I was put on vitamins recently by my MD, niacin, fish oil, a multivitamin. After 3 weeks on a pain killer/ muscle relaxer, also Acylovir, my recent A1C was 7.9 I'm pretty sure that the vitamins/meds are at the root of my rise in numbers. Best of luck

No list found except a small one in the book titled " Tell Me What To Eat" By: Elaine Magee. Some things to eat are: things with lots of fiber, beans, fruits, veggies,. For me pizza, chinese food, roman noodles, bbq sause, regular soda, spagetti, processed meats and fried foods make my sugars go sky high

What most of you are told is so very wrong unless you want your sugar to go higher! I am a T2. You MUST get Dr. Richard Bernstein's Diabetic Solution - he is a T1 but the diet is for both. It's very low carb. 6 C. for B; 12 C. for L; 12 C. for D in the form of veg. along meat/fish etc. It works!!!!! Eat a white pot; cereal, rice, pop corn, etc. and watch your sugar shoot up 100+ pts.

Need to eat a veg with meat/protein to balance pH. Don't eat veggies over limit - get a carb counter book. Don't eat lrg portions of meat. Forget low glycemic that's better for people w/normal BS. U must ck BS and lower meds as needed-it will drop!
53
Marge
July 7th, 2010 - 12:52:44 PM
No fruit until BS in line; then sm serv of berries, 1/2 granny smith apple, 1/2 grapefruit, lemon, lime, better in afternoon. Sty awy from sugar alcohols, (sugar free candy raises BS) and all sugars except plain stevia not mixed with anything else. Some veggies have too much sugar when cooked like carrots.
54
Marge
July 7th, 2010 - 1:15:26 PM
For Mike - your sugars went up because you were in pain, medicines or sick. Stress also raises BS when cortisol rises. Too much niacin can raise BS but not enough in a multi. I take lots of natural prod. to prevent damage from T2 of 15 yrs; BS was 400 when fnd - NO meds & now fasting 93-103, but I stay on this program with NO ill effects from diab because. I prevent them by eating this way - I value my body parts too much! You can do it too! ADA given wrong advise for far too long - just increase your meds and get sicker. Wheat increase BS as much as sugar - no grains! Cave man diet - and you will lose weight. NO MSG, it's in everything, given to mice to make obese, same as alloxan used to bleach flour, given to mice to give them diab, destroys the beta cells of the panc. Some medicines give you diab. research it. I use equal amts. of ground flax, whey protein power - no sug. and ground pecans as my flour mix subst. Good luck everyone!

I've been T2 for 13 years-hate the meds, so key for me is diet and use of chromium pic 500mcg-below great T2 diet from caring doc: breakfast: 1 cup cherios w/ fat free milk- 1/2 pear or banana/coffee/tea w/Sweet&low-nondairy creamer. lunch: 4 slices deli turkey breast or 6oz can tuna-other half of pear of banana from breakfast-water/diet soda dinner: 4 to 6 oz of either lean chic or pork-boiled in water-or lean fish- 1 can spinach, drained-heated w/garlic if desired. Can also have boiled zucchini. Have salad made of cucumbers/radish/mushroom-all u want-touch of tomato-use red vinegar/garlic and touch of veg oil as dressing. Sugar free jello/diet soda/ air popped popcorn-all u want- Treat: once every other weekend-2 slice pizza or small steak and baked potato -dry-Alternate each time! Sunday break: 1 egg and 1 slice dry toast/half pear or banana- Once a month-eat a normal meal in moderation-works for me-good luck!

Yes it is very hard to keep your sugar level in order I just found that I am a type 2 Diabetic I can say to any one out there that after 7 months of finding out research is every thing go online get all the info posible the doctors will tell you notting to support your needs the first thing they say is losse weight how is this posible with someone with leg and foot pain? or some one with a cyst on ovarian ladies only this too could be the case of high suger levels that can cause your dibetic like systoms please get a full check up also getting upset or depression can alson worsten you dibetic systoms as well. As far as food is in order as to what to eat here is a list of foods to avoid...lots of sodas , greases high calestorl foods thats a no no. No more fried food if so limit your poitions as possible if you reg. eat 3 to 4 peaces of fried chicken eat 2 small legs an eat lots of veggies . limit your sweets to a half of doughnut not a whole one count your fibers that is very important not the carbs. Also if you cant get that fiber in try Benifiber I promise you it works every since I have start drinking it as a snack or with meals and or before bed with my Metformin which I take 2 times a day I have seen a differince in my numbers they dumped form 200 and 480 to a low 70 now that I have it under control I have no more pain in my feet no more pain in my legs along with a 1800 calorie meal plain I have droped down form 260lbs at my height of 5'2 to now 190lbs and still doing it with execersies of three times a day which is also important you must wont to live people because this is the thing that can kill you it don't worng you so please stop eating the fatty foods it will help you to stop the fatty foods and the sweets you will live longer and dont for get to eat pleaty of freash veggies and limit you fruits if you have a apple for lunch dont drink a fuit drink like orange juice or apple juice this to can make your number shoot to a record high. sub that soda for water or like I said early benifiber drink or sprinke a bit on you bake, or boiled or grilled foods. this is the summer ladies and genltmen get out there and grill all your foods when the winter hits get you one of those cast iron skillets that look like a grill and do it indoors when the weather is bad. all things are possible. If I can do it in as little as 7months so can you don't give up keep all doctors appointments keep up on your meds even if you do fill better eating right and doing as little as 15mins of exercse a day every things matters. My health care and food expert told me you as a diabetic can eat anything you wont just potion your intake of food if your numbers are high dont eat high fat or high starch foods sub them for foods out there like active life style foods , high fiber pastes such as wheat pastas, wheat bread in stead of 2 peaces of bread in a meal like dinner eat 1 wheat roll. also put lots of veggies on your plate and a golf ball size peace of meat like a medium size chicken breast. stay away from salt and go for the seasons instead dont go crazy with it put enough on for just your taste dont do regular eggs if so boil it or go with egg beaters it work better for a dibetic as well as bacon don't do reguar bacan turkey works best, jello is also great dont do diet soda it makes matter worst if your going to have pizza with kids don't go over board 2 small slices or 1 large slice is great as well , last but not less the can soda I just said try the new smaller can reg sodas you will see the differents in your numbers. as well as proced foods that isn't good for you but for those who just can not stay away think of it this way 1 slice of package ham meat on wheat bread with lettece and tomatoe or a turkey burgar with advocado instead of mayo will not hurt you but fast food will. So remember to portion your foods eat pleanty of fiber as well as veggies such as stir fry will help in the long run I do hope this is helpful and I wish you all well an good health in the many years to come.

For those looking for a list of foods: if you are using the glycemic index, you can get a small book at the book store with all numbers in it. If you just want a general list of foods for diabetics, there isn't one. It is all about balance. You can eat just about anything you want but you have to keep track of how many carbs you eat at each meal. This info is found on the label of most foods today. Make sure you check out what a "serving" is, too. If I remember correct, my husband could have 45 gms of carbs at each meal and 2 snacks of 15 grams. Hope this helps some.

Your fasting (before the 1st meal of the day) bg should be above 70. Your bg 2 hours after a meal should be no more than 180. If you can see a nutritionist, I highly recommend it, it changed my life for the better. Try to eat no more than 45 grams of carbs per meal & 15 per snack. Benefiber is wonderful, it helps flush your body. It is not the same as taking a laxative, it does not cause cramps & you don't have that "explosive" feeling, it helps to regulate your going to the potty. God bless.

How can doctors be so wrong . I wondered why my feet gave me so much trouble. I am afraid if I don't nip it in the bud I will loose my feet like I have seen some do, I too am on here looking for what to eat.

Yes, it all very confusing at first and very depressing to be diagnosed with Diabetes, especially Type 2. I got T2 from an overdose of steroids in the hospital, which was needed to save my life. Two weeks earlier, I was told my sugars were borderline and to change my diet and start walking. Before I could do that, I came down sick with a really bad strain of Pneumonia. By the time I went to the hospital, my kidneys and liver had shut down and by evening I had to be intubated because I could no longer breathe on my own. I was sick for a week before going to the hospital. When I got to where I recognized my mom and daughter, I had been there for about 4 days. I had my brains scrambled from the OD, but I was alive with now T2. The best thing to do for food is not to eat fast food. No starches, or very limited. If you have to carry a lunch, many low carb breads are available and if you use double the meat or add cheese for more protein for lunch will help. No processed lunch meat. You want sliced fresh off the roast, ham, turkey, beef. Protein slows down the absorbsion of sugar from the starch. Lettuce, tomato slices and dill pickle chips are good and Best Foods Mayo made with olive oil. I have kept my HBA1C blood sugar 3 month levels at between 6 and 6.9. Been bad lately. I am eating more of what I shouldn't. Basically, lean meats (I love beef), ham, turkey, pork, chicken, big salad with romaine, green & red leaf lettuce, tomato, bell ppr, cucumbers, green onions, I use any dressing, but watch the carbs on the sweet dressings. I chop lettuce, a couple of days worth, slice and add tomato to my lunch salad each morning. Helps make it easier to eat better prepping food for several days. I also do a lot of cooking on Sundays for the work week lunch and dinner. I have a big can of planters mixed deluxe nuts at my desk for snacking. I also take hard boiled eggs for snack or if feeling like it making deviled eggs. Pretty much no fruit, unless you are just dying to eat it for a craving. I went and got an orange a week ago and it was yummy. If you have to have fruit, apple is best. Small apple with the peel. No carrots, peas, or pineapple, bananas as these are super high in sugar. Sometimes, I have some pineapple with my grilled chicken, bell pepper, onions, and mushrooms. Mushrooms are good for you and good in scrambled eggs. Any grocery store that sells paperbacks, magazines, etc., usually has a complete food counter of calories, carbs, protein, etc. Smaller meals, 5 to 6 a day, and I was told the same like others up to 45 carbs for meals and 15 for breaks. Try to make it less, more like 20-25 for any food intake. NO CARBS unless you are eating it with a protein to slow digestion of the sugars. I take Metformin ER 500mg, two twice a day and one at lunch. Good luck. PS You shouldn't but you can occasionally cheat and have a sweet treat. I will eat salad and meat and very small piece of cake or candy bar or a sour dough roll.

I forgot to mention that I have been Type 2 for 7.5 years now and did go to Diabetic education classes and nutrition education after the hospital. I also take lots of supplements besides the usual vitamins. Be sure to be taking extra B-12 or getting monthly injections and a High Potency B complex tab. I also take Vit D-3, 8000IU daily and HTP5 and Seratonin, DHEA too.

Found out Monday that I am diabetic. It's genetic and being overweight and out of shape...I already knew. Went to the ER with a sugar level of 490. It's scary...there's no other word. Everything you know just changes. I've been working hard at bringing that number down, but it's Friday and I'm still at 250 (298 at fasting A.M.) Don't know what to eat, what portions to eat, and feel like I'm starving. I work full time and there is no snacking on the job and my boss has basically said that if I can't be here he'll have to hire someone who can. So no classes, only appointments that can't be missed. I've surfed the internet trying to find counts or hints or just plain help. It's frustrating when you want to do the right thing, but just don't know how to. Uuugghhh

I also cannot find a list of approved foods and non-approved foods. I had pancreatitis in Jan. Thanks to that they did an MRI and found a malignant tumer on my right kidney. I had my kidney removed in Jan. Since then my blood glucose level has fluctuated up and down. I wake up with it around 250 then eat take my pill and it goes down. Sometimes it goes down to 45 50 or so. It never seems to get within a normal range. I eat no pasta no potatoes, no sugar of any kind. I only eat small portion of meat lots of vegetables, not corn or carrots. and berries. I don't eat bread but do ocasionally have a whole grain muffin made with splenda. What am I doing wrong? I also take cymbalta, Onglyza, simvastatin, lisinipril, previcid, zanex and lyrica. Is it possible that one of the meds are interacting with my glucose meds?

There are such lists all over the internet and I have found them quite easy to find. Also, you need to follow your doctor's advice on foods to eat and foods to avoid. I struggled with this too-I think every diabetic has-but persistence will pay off.

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about seven months ago. I have been getting regular exercise for 28 years, but I am still 100 lbs. overweight due to many fat cells I developed as a child with hypotyhroidism. I also have a poor diet. I eliminated sodas six month ago, as well as candy, but unfortunately, I love orange and grapefruit juice, Mexican food, pizza and beer. My fasting glucose is 155, but my ALC chain only went down to 8.3 from 8.7 I am going to the store to buy some apple cider vinegar and chamomile tea. Apple cider vinegar is to be taken before high carb meals, and chamomile tea is to be taken with or before meals. I will see if these. works at all.

I have been a diabetic for 6 years. I've found a way to get off the medicines and manage my own diabetics. I made up my mind to follow a healty diet low in carbs (no more than 11 a day)those carbs are mostly fruit or vegs. I drink a glass of ice water before eating, another 8 oz glass in between eating and one when finished; then another 8 oz 15 minutes later. I walk 30 minutes daily. I monitor my sugar counts and have been successful. When the reading is not down to 160 l hour after eating, I either walk 10 to 15 minutes or drink the water (8 oz every 15 minutes). Usually I do not have to drink more than 3 to 4 glasses per meal. This is better than taking medicine!

I haven't read all entries; this may be repetitive. Serving sizes are most important. While attending a diabetic clinic at a VA hospital, the class leader showed a full-sized bag of microwave popcorn for a snack. She failed to say the whole bag was THREE servings!

My husband is a thin Type 2 diabetic who happens to be under control. We count carbs,he can eat about 75-80 carbs at a meal and so can most of you!!!! Carb counters are everywhere on the internet!!!!Get them, tape them to your kitchen walls and experiment. The question is always the same in these posts. What can I eat or what can't I eat. I will list the foods that we believe to be off limits,no exception: bananas, orange juice, cake, pie, pizza, pastries of any kind, sweet potatoes, regular or whole wheat pasta, regular or brown rice. Just about all other foods are acceptable if you read the box or bag, to see how many carbs are in it and for what quantity. My husband takes 1/2 pill of metformin after every meal! Forget about the glycemic index!!! It is NOT for diabetics,it is for people who are not diabetic. All carbohydrates will send your blood sugar higher! If one craves something sweet, one can have a cookie, maybe 2. A cookie which is a normal size is usually about 7 grams.Occasionally we have the tiny Dove bars for a snack,6 grams of carbs in each one. The bottom line is,if one counts carbs, cuts out most fatty food, which can also spike blood sugar, one will lose weight. There are NO SECRETS to controlling blood sugar.Less food is essential. Regarding pasta,we do eat pasta but only Dreamfields brand. It will not spike your sugar but your portion has to be only about 4-5 ounces of dry pasta. Nuts are also a problem!!! I forgot to mention it.They are technically carbohydrate free but are loaded with calories from the fat and will spike your blood sugar.Beer is loaded with carbs,it can be drunk but in modest quantities! Read the bottle or use the internet to see how many carbs in that bottle or can. We eat lots of veggies with our meat and fish meals.Just about most vegatables are very very low in carbs. We use just a little olive oil for dressing. We eat fruit 3 times a day.My husband eats 4 prunes every morning.Lunch and dinner, a tennis ball size piece of fruit.Melons of any type will probably spike your blood sugar. I recommend investing in 3 different books about diabetes. They will probably contradict each other but you must be the judge!!!If you can afford it,go to a dietician and join a health club, even if it is only for going on the treadmill!!!!It will make a huge difference in your ability to burn up those carbs. Remember carbs mean energy, you must burn them off like a car does!!! Good Luck,I hope I have helped!!

Lorrie
August 19th, 2010 - 3:46:03 PM
One last comment about what I wrote above. The three books I recommended to everyone will perhaps contradict each other on many things because no two diabetics react the same way to food. You have to experiment a bit and then take your blood readings to see how you react. If you are a newly diagnosed diabetic, get your eyes checked by an ophthomologist( eye doctor) as soon as possible!!!Retinopathy can affect people who have uncontrolled sugar!!!

I've been T2 for the past 4 years. I've also been in denial - as a result my A1C is 13 and my fasting numbers are usually in the 300+. My feet have neuropothy and hurt so much. All I want to do is sleep because I won't eat and I won't be in pain. Finally went to an Endo this past week and I'm committed to lisstening to her and following the directions for the next eight weeks so I can see the impact. New meds, new diet, and committment - I'm praying for success!!! Too young for this.

Avoid steak if you're diabetic. While steak is full of protein and naturally free of carbohydrates, which raise blood sugar levals, the problem lies in the fat. Steak and other types of red meat are high in total fat and saturated fat. Limit your saturated fat intake, since diabetes already puts you at high risk of heart disease and high cholesterol, recommends the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse. Choose leaner types of meat, such as chicken breasts or fish. The Diabetes Lies DrWhitaker.com Learn About The 7 Deadly Diabetes Lies from Dr. Julian Whitaker. Sponsored Links Soy Sauce Diabetics often marinate their foods in soy sauce, or stir-fry meats and vegetables in it, since it's much lower in calories than butter or oil. However, soy sauce is high in sodium. Diabetics should limit their intake of sodium to 2,400 mg a day or less, since they already are at risk of high blood pressure, according to the Diabetes and Hormone Center of the Pacific. Use olive oil instead of soy sauce if you are diabetic. Candy Avoid candy if you're diabetic. This includes such candy as lollipops, chocolate bars and gummy candies. Candy is high in sugar, which raises your body's blood sugar levels. If your blood sugar levels become too high, you run the risk of going into a hyperglycemic state, in which you'll experience excessive sweating, chills and fainting. While sugar-free candies are available, they almost always contain sugar alcohols. Sugar alcohols are byproducts of sugar that can cause such severe gastrointestinal distress as bloating, stomach cramps and diarrhea. White Rice Avoid white rice, which is high in carbohydrates. A cup of white rice has about 53 g of carbohydrates, according to CalorieKing.com. Your body digests carbohydrates much quicker than protein or fat, so white rice raises your blood sugar levels, according to the Diabetes and Hormone Center of the Pacific. Eating too many carbohydrate foods can make your diabetic condition worse. Since white rice contains very little fiber, you also may feel hungry again soon after eating it. All those foods that contain higher amount of sucrose, fructose and glucose are worst diabetic foods * Sweets, Chocolate, Cakes, Pastries and Bakery items * Corn syrup and the foods that contain corn syrup * White bread and white polished rice * Sugar and sugar laden drinks * Honey * Alcohol and caffeine * All the foods those are high in fat and sodium content. List of Foods for Diabetics to Eat Complex Carbohydrates: As mentioned earlier white bread and white rice are not good for diabetics, however diabetics must incorporate some starches in their diet. The better starch choices are grains, cereals, breads and pasta. Fruits: As we know fruits are the powerhouse of fiber, minerals and vitamins. Fruits also are a good source of carbohydrates so they must be consumed only in moderate amount. It is important that diabetics must incorporate three servings of different fruits in their diet. Better choices are apples, oranges, berries and grapefruits. Vegetables: Vegetables are even better than fruits; they are not only full of minerals, vitamins and enzymes but at the same time are lower in their sugar content. Best vegetable choices for diabetics are broccoli, cabbage, spinach, tomatoes and bitter melon. Dairy and Milk Products: Milk is the best source of many important nutrients that our body requires. These essential nutrients can also be obtained by consuming milk substitutes. The best choices are skimmed milk and low fat yogurt. Meat: Meat carries many critical element required by the body. However careful selection is required. It should only be consumed in moderation and leanest part of the meat should be chosen. Better meat choices for diabetics are cottage cheese, poultry, tofu, red meat, egg, fish, peanut butter. If you want to have a free diabetic meal plan specifically designed according to your personal requirement check List Of Foods For Diabetics To Eat. This list will help to design a meal plan that has the ability to control the Signs Of Diabetes in a way that you'll end saying where is my blood sugar? Thanks for all the goods on our diabetest2, I know for sure to eat in moderation is key, very small portions, 4 to 8 sm meals help me, fresh kale, boiled sweet potatoe no additives, fresh salad, romain lettuce, onions, cucumbers, carrots, cottage cheese, salmon small portion baked very little season, ms, dash for season, no can foods due to my hbp too and other health conditions which is to keep my salt intake down. It was very hard at first but now Ichoose to live so i must do what needs to be done exercise, pray, stay streesfree to my best and eat as healthy as possible. The cakes, pies, candy and white products are surely a no-no until you learn yourself and have the counts under control, which is called manageging my count. I must take control of these diseases before they take me out, it you all know what I mean.Take your time and do as much research as possible to find about your diseases as I have and it will get better because everything dont work the same for everybody, either!!! i brought a book "Diabetes Survival Guide" I paid $6.84 at Walgreens. Understanding the facts about diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention, by Stanley Mirsky, M.D., and Joan Rattner Heilman (Originally published as Controlling Diabets the easy way. I can truly say I had a normal blood sugar reading after fasting for the first times in 5 years. I followed the guide and read the chapters daily. I felt better too. What you can eat is in there also, I know that I can't have donuts, but I can have 1 graham cracker and fresh fruit. Blueberries, I also learned that apples and applesauce are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and should be avoided except when you need a quick boost. Well, this stuff if whats in the book and With all the comments I've read, please try the book, and keep the faith with prayer. I'm going to fight this everyday!

P.S. Don't be surprised if you are bombarded with Diabetes this and Diabetes that, I believe our Email addresses are for a data base that will sell the info to retailers who of course have subscriptions for Diabetes control meals, etc... what have you. Let's be smart gang, most of what we can eat is common sense. If it tastes really good and it is not a natural food, we know it's not for us, or a little bit is ok. We know that phyical activity is also paramount. come on let's help ourselves as best we can, We have all just had hope for a cure or at least a way to control this ailment dangle in our faces with no answers, now when you get that Email, don't bite into it, just get that Survival book and try to adhere to it. I hate the way they lure people with the promise of helping them, then for the rest of your life you can expect a "we can help you data"" for a small fee! What a crock, they lure us like sheep. I brought the book, look on line for the credibility of it before you buy it or any other book or magazine. What an awful way for companies to load up their list of clients on our fears. Shame, Shame, and DOUBLE Shame on you! (for having us think you were going to tell us what we can and can not eat for diabetes controll). P.P.S. I won't open one, not one solicitation that will result from this comment from this site. Beware of this type SCAM!

My aic is 6.2 and I have been eating all of the correct foods. I stopped taking Metformin for over one year it was not working so I started with Glipizide 5 one in the Am and one at night. The morning readings are stil at least 140. Should I increase the Glip to a 10 at night since I have found the 10 in the Am brings me down too low and I feel wierd.???????

Marie, your Dr is probably correct.. I am off of insulin, and all meds.. carb counting and exercise has gotten me here.. I walk for 20 minutes and my sugar goes down 20 points.. If I swim I boost sugar up a bit so as to not go to low.. eat a little fruit and go for a half hour of swimming.. Not moving will not get your sugar down. If nothing else you can walk briskly around your house same effect just not having to deal with rain snow or heat . you have nothing to lose except high blood counts and possibly a few extra inches or a more toned body.. KEEP MOVING & GOOD LUCK

It's really about what works for each person. Here is my diet: AM - Choose one as meal and other as snack. 1) Protein (soy) drink 2) hard boiled egg (if eaten as a snack) or 1 poached egg with pumpernickel toast with real butter OR bran muffin OR quinoa or oatmeal with lite (soy) milk OR French toast with lite syrup Lunch - choose two: with fruit (orange, apple, peach, pear, melon or berries)1) 2-3 oz tuna, salmon, chicken or turkey sandwich with mustard 2) green salad & low cal or fat free dressing 3) homemade veggie soup, 1 small to medium orange or serving of berries (the darker the better) PM snack - apple or celery with 1T PB (any nut butter okay) or hummus & crackers or whole wheat tortilla Dinner - 1 C beef or chicken broth; small steak, piece of chicken or fish; any low glycemic vegetable; quinoa or whole grain pasta(allowed small sweet potato once a wk); Can also have a small green salad with oil & vinegar dressing. Dessert - diet Jello with fresh fruit or lite canned in own juice; dried apricots, pineapple prunes or apples & small piece of cheese OR frozen soy dessert or sorbet Fat or oil - 3 per day; Protein 5-6 servings; Whole Grains - 3-4 servings; Fruit - 2; Vegetables - 5- 6 if starchy otherwise unlimited; Dairy/Soy - 2-3 servings; Liquids - 6 - 8 cups daily (water, diet soda* limited to 1 per day, herb tea, coffee, vegetable juice* tomato, carrot, green or V-8 low sodium (recommend 4 - 6 ounces max) For sweetner I use Equal or SPelnda but am also trying small amounts of agave nectar to see how it affects my blood sugar - I heard it was better. When I do give in I have "planned" ahead and keep sugar free hard candies in fruit flavor at my office, and sugar free chocolate pieces at home just in case. The sugar free fudgsicles & popsicles are also okay once in a while. I eat 1000 fewer calories than what it takes to maintain. See Internet for how to calculate based upon your height, current weight, activity level, and age. I'm loosing slowly and safely; limit sugar and sodium; and cook many foods from scratch following a natural approach. My current intake is 1500 cal per day. If I have a day I go over then I try to increase my activity and focus on better choices and portion control the next few days. I also use potassium chloride salt substitute in limited amounts or no salt at all but lots of fresh parsley, cilantro, and other seasonings instead. Because I can't have dairy, I turned to frozen soy desserts and I think that since they have protein, they are actually better for diabetics. I am actually pre-diabetic and being treated for thyroid issues - they aded T3 after years on only T4 but put me on Metformin HCL 750 mg 1 x day as a precaution. I have read that an all vegetarian diet can often reverse the effects of insulin resistance so I am moving in that direction if this doesn't work. Calorie level of 1,600 = 1.5 cups fruit and 2 cups of veggies Calorie level of 1,800 = 1.5 cups of fruit and 2.5 cups of veggies Calorie level of 2,000 = 2 cups of fruits and 2.5 cups of veggies Hopes this helps some of you.

I just got a wake up call, been t2 for over 10 yrs, went to eye dr, have hemoraging in the blood vesels of the eyes, normal but not healing like should. sent me to med Dr. was taking actos45mg,1 daily glyburide metformin 2/500 mg in the morn, two in the eveniing. my bs and aic has been very high. started me on junivea once a day. told me get my diet under control or I am going on the needle. Told me my kidneys are proabibly already damaged. my feet hurt, my knees kill me at night. I started the junavia 3 days ago, have drastically changed my diet, meat, veg, fruit, water. my b/s was 275+ just checked it 133 before eating. but I have been having cramps, in my legs and arms. I will try to go back to Dr soon. diet soda ran mine up overnight. Dr told me no flower, no sugar. I don't do alot of exercise, but i do work on alot of stuff around the hobby farm. lots of building and repair type work. wHAT IM GETTING FROM THIS IS eat meat in a smaller portion, add vegs, and limit fruit. keep records of what you eat, monitor your bodys reaction to it, and eat your meals and snacks on a schedule. I wish there was a list of favorble foods.
