The Power of Break-Fast

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Yet, so many of us neglect to take the time to eat a decent meal in the mornings. I’m guilty of that as well. Personally, I’m just not a fan of “breakfast foods.” I’m adverse to bacon and eggs, waffles, pancakes and all that other stuff.

In the U.S., dinner plays a bigger role. Why is that? We wait till we are starving and then stuff ourselves with a huge meal right before we go to bed. It’s like running on empty and then stuffing a turkey for no reason. If you think about it, it makes more sense to eat during the early part of the day so you can expend those calories before crashing at night.

Since I’m on this health kick I’m trying to eat healthier and more frequent meals through out the day.

More fruit, veggies, and lots of water. Oh ya, and breakfast. No, a cup of coffee during your commute to work does not count as a meal. However, a fruit bar or granola bar can be used as a substitute. Or even real fruit. *Gasp* Try it, bananas are awesome.

If you’re like me (lucky) and work from home, then you probably have time to whip up a quick and healthy meal. Don’t like to cook? Cereal with milk works. Don’t like cold foods first thing in the AM? Try instant oatmeal. Pour some water over the oats, put it in the microwave for 3 minutes and voila! Instant heartwarming goodness. And good for keeping you *ahem* regular.

Speaking of breakfast, I just got back from brunch at an organic cafe and enjoyed a rather delicious omelet. Smoked salmon and scallions with egg whites only. YUM-O. It was tasty, filling, but not fattening. If you’re into smoked salmon with eggs, see below.

Here’s a similar recipe with scrambled eggs.

Remember, eat first thing in the morning. It’s called breakfast because your body has been starving for 8 hours. Hence, break the fast. If you keep up this good habit, you could break the fats as well.

I enjoyed your "breakfast blog"....It was well written and it is a good reminder of its importance in regards to overall health. Actually learned the true meaning of "break....fast". Never knew that, haha. Another quick and nutritious meal is the low fat cottage cheese (I like the 1% one) mixed in with fruit like fresh blueberries and "unsweetened" apple sauce....High in protein, low in fat, and quick for those on the go. Oh yeah, Canadian bacon "eh" and fried egg whites on an english muffin worth consideration also.

Great article. The program I am on also states that breakfast should be the most important meal and scale down from there. come visit http://myweightlossmotivator.com and check it out!
