With Cinco de Mayo around the corner, many people are planning fiestas revolving around one thing. Getting drunk. With tequila being the national liquor of Mexico, folks all over will be celebrating with the (in)famous Margarita. Personally, I’m not a fan of tequila, the mere smell makes me queasy, not to mention many nights I’d rather forget thanks to the evils of the big T. But, there are lots of tequila loving peeps here, so here are some recipes to help you ring in May 5.

12 oz margarita mix
2 oz lime juice

1 1/2 cups tequila
1/2 cup Triple Sec
2 tablespoons sifted confectioners’ sugar
Ice cubes
Lime wedges
Coarse salt
Lime wedges, for garnish
Instructions
Combine half of each of the first 4 ingredients in container of an electric blender. Process 30 seconds. Gradually add enough ice cubes to bring mixture to 3 1/2 cup level; blend until smooth. If you want to freeze for later use, pour mixture into a large freezer container. Repeat procedure with remaining half of ingredients. Cover tightly and freeze up to 1 month.
To serve, If frozen, thaw 20 minutes or until mixture becomes slushy. Rub rims of cocktail glasses with lime wedge. Place salt in saucer; spin rim of each glass in salt. Pour beverage into prepared glasses. Garnish, if desired. Serve immediately. Yields about 7 cups.
The Traditional Margarita
Ingredients
- 1½ ounces silver tequila
- ¾ ounce Cointreau or Triple Sec
- ¾ ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
- 1 tbsp superfine sugar
- A lime wedge
Instructions
To prepare a salt-rimmed glass, wet the rim of the margarita glass with water and place the glass face down in a dish with salt. Then place the glass in the refrigerator and chill. Add a few cubes of ice and pour all the ingredients, except the lime wedge, into a shaker and shake vigorously. Take the chilled glass out of the refrigerator and pour the traditional margarita into it. Position the lime wedge on the rim of the glass.
