Beat the Heat With Cooling Foods

The heat is on and summer is in full effect. Recent triple digit temperatures in SoCal have inspired me to look for foods to stay cool during hot times.

We all know that fruits and vegetables are good for you. But, during the summer months, they can also help you cool down. Look for foods with high water content such as leafy lettuce, corn on the cob, and watermelon. All contain significant amounts of water that can thin your blood and help your body release heat. Another alternative is to eat spicy foods to help you cool off by sweating it out. Hot peppers, ginger, horseradish and even a hot bowl of Pho can all do the trick. I’m sure a hot bowl of spicy soup isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you wake up to 95 degree weather, but trust me, it works.

Another benefit of eating high water content foods — helping to improve the look of cellulite.

Yes, the dreaded dimples can be gone if you keep your body hydrated. Check out these simple recipes, courtesy of Health.com.

Watermelon Popsicles
Puree seedless watermelon (about 92 percent water) in a blender with a handful of fresh mint leaves. Pour into popsicle molds, and freeze.

Grilled Peaches
Split and pit a peach (about 88 percent water). Place cut sides down on a well-oiled grill, and cook 2 minutes or until grill marks form. Turn peach halves over, and cover grill. Cook 3 more minutes or until softened. Top with a splash of balsamic vinegar, and serve with fat-free sour cream.

Cucumber Mocktail
Chop, then muddle one-third of a peeled cucumber (about 96 percent water) in a highball glass. Top with lime-flavored seltzer and a spritz of lime juice. Garnish with cucumber slice

Very simple and good for you. Next time you have a BBQ, just bring one of these and it’s sure to be a hit!

One last thing to beat the heat. Water. Yes, water itself is the body’s best friend. You know you need to be drinking more water, and for good reason. Water flushes toxins from your system, regulates body temp, acts as an insulator for joints, prevents kidney stones, and supplies the body with a raft of crucial minerals. Water is especially beneficial when it comes to weight loss. Drinking a glass or two 30 minutes before a meal helps curb your appetite. The daily recommended amount is 8 oz, 8 times a day, so drink up!
